Far Behind the Forest of Flying Paper Airplanes

Howdy doody everybody. Once again I fully intended to do a regular entry, but I have no time left for that. So

Details of My Life

If you got married to your most best guy friend, would you be happy?
Well, I had the pleasure of marrying my best friend. Of course you know Megan isn't a guy. If I married my best guy friend I would be pretty upset because I think I've proven beyond reasonable doubt that I'm not gay.

What did you do this afternoon?
I sat at a desk with a bored look on my face.

When was the last time you smiled?
I think it was when I saw two guys arguing about whether or not Cedric Ceballos could see through the blindfold in the 1992 dunk contest. I remember hearing the guys arguing about that back in the day. It's nice to see that the jury is still out on that one.

Can you use chopsticks?
I can use chopsticks like a champion.

Who was the last person you slept next to?
The only person I sleep next to is Megan.

What do you order from taco bell?
I haven't been inside a Taco Bell in over 10 years. I don't even know what they sell anymore, but if it tastes as bad as it used to, you can have your taco smell. I'll eat almost anywhere else.

Do you still talk to the person you fell hardest for?
Yeah, and I married her. I don't know if any of the other people I've fallen for over the years were any harder than the first two go-rounds with Megan, but all those other girls were married before round 3 with Megan and I didn't have a regret for any of them. And somehow when Megan and I started hanging out again, I found myself still having feelings for her. So I think if time is a factor, Megan takes the cake in a big way.

Do you remember what you were like a year ago?
Megan and I had only been dating for a few months a year ago, but I already knew I was going to marry her. I was a little rougher around the edges then and was generally a little more temperamental, but I think she's really helped me improve since then.

Do you have unlimited texting?
I still don't use the word "text" as a verb. It's still a noun to me. I think that should answer the question.

Ever cried because of happiness?
I wept like a girl when I was on the mission. We were singing "Called to Serve" at the end of a zone conference and it just struck me how much I loved being a missionary. I could barely sing I was crying so much.

Anything you're giving up on?
I'm giving up on my hope that the Cardinals will be any good this year. My official prediction for them this year, as it is with every year, is that they will go 10-6 and win a single playoff game. This year I say that, as I do every year, but I don't put any stock in it. Kurt Warner is not the answer we're looking for, and Matt Leinert isn't stepping up. It's sad, really.

Whose pool did you last swim in?
The last time I swam was in the pool at Megan's old house.

Are you planning on throwing a party this summer?
Well, we really didn't throw any parties this summer, and now the summer is gone. So the answer is no. But we fully intend to have people over and have a good time somewhere in the near future.

How was last week?
Not the best. Last week was when Megan found out she was losing her job. Of course we're dealing with it pretty well, but it makes things a little uneasy.

What could you go for right this second?
A weekend. A long, relaxing weekend. It's a good thing I have one just an hour away.

What are your plans for the morning?
Which morning? Tomorrow morning I'm going to sleep in, and then I'm going to put more Atari games on the 5.25" disks I just got off ebay. I got 23 disks for 3 bucks. It was a steal.

Do you ever turn off your cellphone?
Yes. Lucky for me, though. I don't give the number out to too many people, so it really doesn't ring all that often.

Do you like certain romantic cliches?
Megan and I are a romantic cliche. We have often joked that our story could be easily made into a romantic comedy.

Where is your best friend at this exact moment?
Megan is still at work. Today is her last day, which is a little weird for both of us.

Do you have a ceiling fan located in your room?
There's no ceiling fan in our bedroom, but we have a little fan to keep things cool.

What is the worst thing that has happened to you lately?
I think Megan losing her job has to top that list. If you've read her entry about it, we're keeping things in perspective and we're not freaking out about it. Even though it may turn into a good thing (Megan will get the chance to bone up on web design and flash animation, which will make her more employable down the line) it still might be a bad thing in the short term. I'm staying hopeful, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little concerned.

What color is your car?
It's a metallic grey that the clear coat is peeling off of.

What sounds are you currently hearing?
I hear only a small fan blowing at the back of my head. I should go turn it off.

Have you told anybody you loved them today?
I told Megan before I left for work. But that comes as no surprise. I have to say, I thought there'd be more interesting questions in here or that I'd at least come up with some more interesting answers, but it just isn't happening.

Do you miss anyone?
I miss Megan and I miss Turbo. Lucky for me, I'll be seeing them both soon.

Are you growing apart from someone close?
I think I'm growing apart from all my single friends, which is something I thought would happen. I'm fine with it. I've had generations of friends come and go in my life, only few of whom ever resurface later on. But it is a different world as a married person, which is exactly what I expected. Megan says it's like a different dimension. The same people are there and it seems the same, but somehow you know it's all different. You see your single friends but you interact with them differently than you did when you were single. It's a different dimension.

How much are you on the phone daily?
Less than 5 minutes. I don't like talking on the phone and I tend to keep things brief.

Are you in a good mood?
I'd say so. I'm going to hit this three day weekend like a tonne of feathers in about 40 minutes, so I'd say everything is hunky dory.

Have you ever been in love?
I am currently in love and it is my intention to stay that way for the rest of eternity. So far so good.

Do you love your life?
I'd say so. It has its ups and downs, but it's been good to me so far.

Who do you trust with EVERYTHING?
This questionnaire was obviously made for single people. Of course I trust Megan more than I trust anyone else in the universe. She knows the absolute worst things about me and loves me anyway. There's nothing I can't trust her with.

What will you be doing in 3 hours?
Relaxing. Ooh, I can't wait.

What were you doing at midnight last night?
Sleeping. We had to get up early this morning so we could pack and put the house we're sitting back in order. I was probably snoring like a Swedish lumberjack at midnight.

What is your background on your phone?
On the outside I have a picture of Megan and on the inside I have a picture of Turbo climbing over his house. Megan debated with me over whether or not she should be on the inside, but the way I figure, she's on the outside so she's the first thing people see when they look at my phone.

Where is your favorite place to shop?
It used to be Hoodlum's, which was more than just a store. It was something akin to an oasis of awesome in a desert of crazy. But now it's gone. I think I'd have to toss it up between Eastside Records and Bookman's, but I haven't been to Eastside in a long time.

What is your favorite thing to wear?
Oddly enough, I really like my orange Hoodlum's t-shirt. It's a good color and it shows I supported the best record store on earth.

Do you think you are a good driver?
No. I'm not a good driver. But I'm a conscientious driver because I know I'm not a good driver, so you're probably safer with me on the road than any of these lunatics who think they're good drivers. I heard a statistic that 75% of Americans consider themselves above average drivers. With a decent distribution, more than half of the drivers in this country should be average or below average. So I would venture to guess that about 50% of the drivers you see on the road are either mediocre or bad drivers who think they're good. Call me crazy but I'd rather be behind a bad driver who knows his limitations than a bad driver who has delusions of goodness and drives like a maniac.

Could you go a day without eating?
It's called fast Sunday, and not only can I do it, but I can do it without whining (a feat I thought I'd never acheive in my early days of fasting).

Who was the last person you talked to on the telephone?
Megan. She's about the only person I call these days.

Were you happy when you woke up today?
Yeah. It's Friday and I'll be sleeping in my own bed tonight. What's not to like about today?

Are you ticklish?
I think I'll go ahead and use my 5th ammendment rights on this one.

First thing you do when you wake up?
Go get a drink of water. I'm usually parched when I wake up.

What's on your bedroom floor right now?
Clothes. Lots and lots of clothes.

Ever talked to someone that was drunk?
I've talked to people who have taken a number of substances both legal and ill. Most of them keep asking me the same question over and over. It's actually pretty boring.

Do you trust people easily?
I tend to trust way too much way too early and it has bitten me in a big way sometimes. If I was ever able to collect on all the money I've lost being a trusting guy, Megan might not have to fine a new job.

Do any of your jeans have rips, tears, and holes in them?
Some of them do, but they were put there by me and my crazy jean tearin' lifestyle, not by some machine in the pants factory.

How many pillows on your bed?
Two. One for me and one for Megan. I can't do multiple pillows because I get a kink in my neck, and I can't do down pillows because they poke me in the face and go flat in the middle. So gimme a regular pillow stuffed with some sort of synthetic and I'll be asleep in no time. If you made it to the end of this meme without needing to use your pillow, give yourself a gold star.

Not to worry . . .

Well the trouble my company's been having hasn't improved at all. In fact it's gotten a lot worse. As a result they had to let me go on Wednesday. They've been letting people go slowly based on where the need is and who's been the the least amount of time. Since there are two designers and I've only been there since February my number was up.

Downside
The down side is that I'm really going to miss the people I work with. I've gotten pretty close to the girl I share an office with. After we found out on Wednesday we both sat and cried a bit like girls are allowed to do. We'll stay in touch I'm sure, but it is rare to find working situations where you love your job and your coworkers.

Optimistic Upside
Well, there are a couple of upsides actually.

1. They are letting me stay for the rest of the month so I can have an income while looking for a new job. They are also giving my as much time off as I need to go to interviews or whatever else I need.

2. I've just finished one free lance job with another in the works and we're house sitting next week, so we've got alternate sources on income coming in the next couple of weeks.

3. We've got a plan that will hopefully get me back working without missing a day of income.
I started the process of getting myself registered as a substitute teacher two years ago to kill time while I was looking for a design job. This means I've got my fingerprint card which is the most time consuming part of the whole process. Today I ordered my official transcripts from ASU and they'll be ready on Monday. If I drop all the paperwork off at the Department of Education, I should be a certified substitute teacher by the end of the day. I can use the rest of the week registering myself with the different school districts in the valley. Since there is always a shortage of teachers, sub jobs come by pretty easy. My dad has been a substitute teacher for the past five years and hardly misses a day during the school year.
The great part of the master plan is that I'll only have a six hour work day which will leave me extra time to learn more web design and flash. This will make me a much more competitive designer. I'm excited because I've really wanted to learn flash and this is the perfect opportunity for me to do so. The dance company I do freelance work for would like me to redo the header on the top of the page. I'm going to see if I can work out a deal with her to redesign her website at a discounted rate. This will allow me to gain experience and have a decent portfolio piece.

I'm really grateful I had this job-no matter how short of a time it was. I really think it was where I needed to be at the time. I feel really good about the direction things are going. Today my coworker and I were talking about life and how if your doing the best you can, you'll always be taken care of. She's not a member of the church, but we've been able to have really great gospel discussions about life and love and all sorts of stuff. I'm really going to miss that.

So not to worry.

We've got lots of faith that everything is going to be OK and we'll still be able to make ends meet.

On a different note, I'm really excited about a website I've become a member of called the grocery game. The site couples up the deals the different grocery stores are having with the coupons that come in the Sunday paper. With the combination of in store specials and Sunday coupons allows you to get a select number of items free and a whole bunch of stuff 50-90% off. The idea is to stock up on items when they are really cheap so you don't have to pay more for them later. Last week James and got a free loaf of bread. I've just started, so I don't have my three months of coupons built up get, but I'm super excited about it. If anyone is interest, the website is www.thegrocerygame.com.

I'm pretty excited to have the weekend in front of us. James has to work for a few hours tomorrow which really stinks, but we'll still have most of the day. I'm anxious to get some cleaning done. It's not too bad because my wonderful husband cleaned the kitchen, did the dishes and some laundry on Wednesday when I got laid off. Man I love that guy! We could still use to do some ward work and clean the rest of the house though.

I never thought I would be so excited to be clipping coupons and pull weeds in all my life.

Well, you cats have a great weekend and I'll talk to you later.

Megan

Friday...or Not

Hey everybody. Sorry I haven't been updating as regularly as we'd all like (well, I guess I can't speak for you, but I sorta wish I updated more regularly). I can honestly say that my update today isn't the important one. I happen to know that Megan has an update in the works and it will be much more of interest than any fluff I might churn out. So look for hers and bug her until she puts it up.

So today didn't feel like Friday at all. It didn't feel like Friday mainly because I have to go into work tomorrow. It is beyond rediculous that I should be working on Saturday. I really can't go into a full-on session of rage about how rediculous it is that I'll be working, but suffice it to say that my anger is brought on not by the fact that I have to work, but that in being asked to work I have been lied to repeatedly and people who actually want to work and need the money and have come in multiple times asking if they can work are not being allowed to work. It stinks. Let's leave it at that, shall we?

But there was a silver lining today as there will surely be one tomorrow: skeletor and the head librarian weren't there. Things are so much better when my coworker and I are unsupervised. We get more done, we actually enjoy ourselves, and the time really flies. So if things go as they should, I will be able to be in and out of work before my brain realizes that I'm in a place I really shouldn't be in on a weekend.

Well, this is waxing rediculous, so I think it's time to just kick it to the meme. Take 'er away meme.

My State Of Mind

On a scale from 1 to 10, how good are you at Guitar Hero?
I have never played guitar hero, and if things go as I plan I never will. I think it's more fun to actually pick up an instrument that you actually know how to play and make actual music. But I know I'm living in the stone ages with thinking like that.

What tv show do you watch most?
These days Megan and I are chugging our way through the 5th season of Monk. I don't know what show we're going to do next, but whatever it is, it'll be good.

Do you have a job?
Yeah. Someday I hope to have a job I don't hate.

If you had a paid vacation to anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I think we all know. I would love to be able to take Megan to Cambodia and let her see what I've been rattling on and on about all these years.

Do you think the guy should always pay?
No. I love it when a woman pays every now and again, especially because almost every woman I've taken out in the last 8 years made more money than I did. But I do believe that a guy should open doors and be a gentleman in all things. But going dutch or having the girl offer to pay is just awesome sometimes.

Have you ever wanted to be on a game show?
Yeah. I have a large cache of worthless knowledge. I might make a bit of money on a game show.

Randomly click on a song from your playlist. What's the first line of that song?
The song I randomly clicked on was "Ole" by The Bouncing Souls. The first English words in the song are "Bouncing Souls no one can beat us. We drink beer and wear adidas." Truer words have never been spoken. I would also like to say that few punk bands are as good to watch live as The Bouncing Souls.

Who was your first kiss?
Amey Durfee. It's really funny to think back on it. It's really kind of an embarassing story, so I won't go into it.

Describe your dream house.
Paid for. Seriously, I think I would hate living in a super huge or overly fancy house. I don't want to live in a house that feels more like a museum, where I'm not allowed to touch anything. I want a house that feels like home and I'd like it to be paid for. Is that so much to ask?

Where did you last go out to eat?
I had a Circle K hot dog today. It was delicious.

Have you ever been in a car wreck?
I was once in a car that had a blowout on the freeway. We slammed into the median and messed up the side of the car a bit. Oddly enough, earlier that day we had another flat tire and the windshield was smashed by a branch that randomly fell off a tree. It was a bad day for driving. Lucky for me, I wasn't behind the wheel so it seemed like some incredibly hard to believe movie.

What do you plan on naming your baby girl?
As far as I know, I'm not having a baby of any sort right now. Megan and I are pretty sure she's not pregnant. But Megan like Bible names like Esther, Rachel, Ruth, etc. and I can dig it.

Your baby boy?
Jimmy jr. I thought we'd been over this. But seriously, I want a son to have my name, but I don't want to inflict a nickname on him.

What's your musical guilty pleasure?
I really like the song "Rock Ya Body" by M.V.P. It's exactly the kind of rap music I don't like, but there's something about that song that is irresistable for some reason.

What was the last book you read?
Sheesh, I think the last book I actually finished may have been "Now I Can Die in Peace" by Bill Simmons. I need to read more.

How long does your morning routine take?
I can do it in under 15 minutes if I have to (under 5 in a pinch) but if I have time, like I normally do, I use all the time I have. So if I have an hour I'll loaf for 45 minutes and then get everythng together in the last 15 minutes.

What is the dumbest thing you've ever done?
Now there's a pit without a bottom. I was a kid in a small town, so we had to invent our fun (which, for you city kids, is a lot more fun than anything all y'all ever did. Seriously). So I did things with fire, trucks, horses, etc. that were pretty dumb. I can't say that any of them was any dumber or smarter than any other. Is car jousting dumber than puring every flammable substance you can find into a can and lighting it? I dunno.

Do you return the buggies at Wal-Mart?
You get buggies at Wal-Mart? Or do you mean the shopping carts? I'm try to be a decent person and return my cart most of the time.

What is your favorite fast food place?
Fili B's.

Do you have any plans for tomorrow?
Yeah. I'm going to go to work and make sure the library is open for all the people with nothing better to do.

Are there any movies you've seen more than ten times?
Mystery Men, Saving Silverman, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Princess Bride, The Garfield Halloween Special, Army of Darkness. There might be others, but those are the ones that come to mind at the moment.

What are your biggest pet-peeves?
I was just thinking about that yesterday. I don't think I have as many as I used to. Having a wife has really taken the edge off of a lot of my old aggressions. I know large furry boots and gigantic googly grandma sunglasses drive me up the wall still. People who endanger my life by talking on the phone while driving still get to me. But I don't think I get as peeved in general as I used to.

Why is your boyfriend/girlfriend your boyfriend/girlfriend?
I don't have a girlfriend. I upgraded and got a wife, which is way better. But she's my wife because I love her and because she said yes.

What do you usually eat for breakfast?
A granola bar.

Do you like to cook?
Not really, but I'll throw down some cooking every now and again. I cooked noodles for us last night, and I made the tacos a couple weeks ago. Yeah, tacos and noodles. I should have my own cooking show.

What music genres could the world do without?
It would be wrong to say the world could do without a musical genre regardless of how much it annoys me. Rap metal, for example, drive me nuts (with the notable exceptions of Faith No More and certain 311 songs) but it is a true expression for the artists who make the music and the fans who consume it. Sure, industry demands and clear channel interference factor in a bit, but when it comes down to it, music is expression and I'm not the sort of person to say that any person should not be allowed to express the things they think or feel no matter how much they annoy me personally. Whether or not I should be subjected to crappy music in public places is a different matter, but crappy music certainly has the right to exist. So there you go Alanis Morrisette, I just defended your right to put out the most annoying and whiney sounds on the planet. I hope you appreciate what I do.

What do you want to do for the rest of your life?
This is a question I have thought about a lot lately. I know things that I would like to do, but they're all mutually exclusive. So just pretend you've shaken a magic 8-ball and the answer came back, "Ask Again Later."

Do you get along with your siblings?
Yeah. They're all good people.

Are you good at Sudoku puzzles?
I don't even know how to do sudoku, and I'm certainly not going to learn now.

Are you a pack-rat?
Unfortunately I did inherit a bit of that gene, but I also have the gene that enjoys clearing things up and throwing away junk. So every now and again I'll throw pack-ratedness to the wind and throw stuff away. It works for me.

How late did you sleep this morning?
I was up at 6:00. I had another nightmare that Turbo died (second one this month) so I got up when my alarm went off, got a drink, and checked to make sure Turbo was ok. I think I'll be crushed if our little guy ever gives up on life.

Are you a creative person?
I am to some extent. How creative do you have to be to be a creative person? Wherever that bar is set, I'm brushing my shorts on it as I barely get over it. (That's a high jumping metaphor, for those of you who may be scratching your heads).

Do you like to sing?
Yeah. I sing every day. Sometimes Megan and I joke that our life is like a musical because we could break into song and dance at almost any moment.

How many songs are on your ipod?
I cleared it out not too long ago, so there are currently 1,527 songs on there.

What was the last movie you saw in theaters?
Megan and I just went and saw Prince Caspian last night. It was pretty good. I really need to reread the books.

What color are your pants?
They're pre-faded blue jeans. I would gladly settle for jeans that haven't already been worn in before I get them, but fashions being what they are, pants that are actually new are a little hard to come by.

What did you do to celebrate last Valentines Day?
I bought Megan a trophy and spent every last penny I had on dinner and presents.

Is your house clean?
It's clean-ish. We would straighten up if company was coming over, but if they came unannounced, we wouldn't be too embarassed.

How old are you?
29. And I just realized that I've been telling people I'm still 28. I had a birthday and forgot to factor in the fact that I'm older as a result.

Do you have any plants in your house?
We have a cactus named Chachi (different Chachi. I replaced old Chachi with a new model).

Are you afraid of getting old?
Not really. I was afraid of getting old as a single guy, but now that I'm married I think I can handle it a little better.

Who's in the room with you?
Megan was in the room, but now she's playing Super Mario Sunshine on the Game Cube. I think she like that game or somethin'.

Are you allergic to anything?
As far as I know I'm only allergic to pennicillin.

Well kids, there you have it. Another Friday, another meme.

The Moment You've All Been Waiting For!

Well, it's at least the moment I've been waiting for. We finally got our wedding pictures back from Lindy and she did a great job. I've uploaded a slideshow of some of the best images for your viewing pleasure. One of the disks was scratched really bad and I haven't been able to access any of the images, but we've got enough to make a decent slide show. If you would like copies of any of them let us know. I'm really excited because we have the rights to all the images so I can do anything I want with them.
Ahhh . . . I love Photoshop.

I know some of you are dying for a weekend update, so I'll give a short summation and I'm sure James with fill in all the gaps later. I know he's currently working on a monster blog that will update you with all the goings on lately.

We had a pretty great weekend. On Friday we had a quiet evening at home. I'm trying to remember exactly what we did but I'm pretty sure it involved several fun filled hours of watching Monk.
On Saturday we went and picked up a printer for my computer. It's a pretty nifty printer for $20. I found it on Craig's list and it has separate color cartridges so you can buy only the color you run out of which is kinda nice. It also has a pop-up touch screen where you can edit photos, check the job status or a great number of things. It also has a separate paper tray for photo paper so I can print my own 4x6 photos. That will come in handy since we just got all our wedding pictures back.

We also got to go to the temple on Saturday with my parents. Afterwards we went to dinner at the restaurant that made me fall in love with Thia food. That night our ward had an Elders Quoram party. It was great to get to know a lot of the couples in the ward again. It's also pretty great to feel like the kids again. I was starting to be considered pretty old in the singles wards by the time I left, but when people found out that I was 26 at the party, they looked at me like they didn't think people were born in 1981.

On Sunday I taught the Mia Maids class which is where they've decided to put me. Last week I was with the Beehives. The major difference I've noticed is that the Beehives are really chatty but their comments usually aren't related to the lesson. The Mia Maids already know that it's rude to be chatty but aren't quite to the point where they like to contribute a lot in class. So most of the class they just look really bored. This is a whole new ball game than teaching in Relief Society or Sunday School. Now I've got to find a way to be entertaining every week.

Well sorry for the abrupt end, but I best be off to work.

Things to Do With 20 Bucks

So Megan and I had a pretty great weekend. Among the many amazing things we did, we stretched 20 bucks farther than we ever thought possible. In order to lay down the path of this 20 bucks, it is necessary for me to talk about this weekend out of sequence. So we'll follow the 20 bucks first and then I'll fill in the non-20 bucks stuff afterward.

On Friday Megan and I decided to go see the new Indiana Jones movie. We headed out for the dollar theater, but before we hit the theater we needed to pick up some cash. So we stopped at a convenience store and I got 20 bucks back on $1 worth of Laffy Taffy(tm). We headed over to the theater and spent part of our money on tickets for the movie, popcorn and a delicious beverage. The movie was not terrible, but not as good as any of the other Indiana Jones movies. I think I would've been really disappointed to drop 10 bucks on that movie, but the benefit of having a dollar theater is that you're not blowing a bunch of money to go see a movie, so your expectations for the movie aren't as high. Mainly, I think Spielberg needs to lay off aliens for a while. I think the movie would've been way better if it 1) included actual historical or archaeological facts 2) didn't have aliens, which is the most hokey premise for an Indiana Jones movie ever. Other than that, it was fine.

On Saturday Megan and I were going to do some yard work, but we don't really have any yard work implements. So we decided to go out and hit some yard sales and see what we could see. We were a little disappointed because there weren't too many yard sales near our house. We drove by a few sad-looking yard sales without stopping. We found one last yard sale in our area and we decided to stop. When we got out of the car, Megan recognized a girl from her old ward. As it turned out, the girl and her fiance were having a yard sale so they wouldn't have as much stuff to move when they got married. So they were telling everyone, "We're not trying to make money, we're just trying to get rid of everything." As we pulled up they were trying to convey to a guy who didn't speak much English that he could take everything he could fit in his truck for $10. Megan and I ended up getting a few things for ourselves. I got a bookshelf for my video games, Megan got some clothes and that small-holed waffle iron she's been wanting, and we also picked up a couple Seinfeld posters for decorating our casa. Specifically, we are now the proud owners of these two posters:

Both of these posters are now hanging in the entertainment room, which is growing more and more awesome (more on that later).

The next place the $20 took us was to buy a fire pit we saw on craigslist. We picked up the fire pit for $5, which was a steal. Once again, the guy was moving and was just trying to get rid of things. The fire place was the last impressive thing the $20 bought us. After that it bought us lunch at Costco and made a small donation to charity. By the time we reached the end of the $20, we just had to stand in awe of what all it got us. Let's review, shall we?

* Two Movie tickets
* One Large Popcorn and Drink
* Three shirts
* One Jacket
* One Waffle Iron
* One Bookcase
* Two Seinfeld Posters
* One Fire Pit
* Lunch for Two at Costco
* One Small Donation to Charity

That's a long way for 20 bucks to go in this day and age.

Well, I have to wrap this up in less time than I'd like. I've been working on this entry in short spurts for way too long. The weekend I'm talking about was over a week ago. I need to just finish up and let y'all read this.

There are two other things we need to cover from this weekend, one thing that we bought after the 20 bucks were gone, and one thing we saw on the side of the road that blew our minds.

The other thing we bought was a little something we found at DI (aka The Land of Wonders). Megan and I were looking to see if anyone gave any useful lawn care tools to DI, but as we found, those aren't the sorts of things people give away. I guess if you find a good shovel, rake, or lawnmower you just keep it until it's too old and broken to be donated. Anyway, while we were in DI, I saw a little black box that looked a little familiar. It looked like a small TV, but the screen wasn't like a TV screen at all. It was narrower and if it was a printed page, you'd say it was a portrait rather than a landscape. I recognized immediately that I was staring at a Vectrex that DI was undoubtedly selling as a crappy TV. Vectrex was a contemporary of the Atari 2600. It was (and still is) the only home gaming system that had its own vector graphics monitor (hence the name Vectrex). Vectrex was kind of a rare beast, seeing as how it came out shortly before the video game crash of 1983. The console itself normally sells on ebay for upwards of $200. We bought our Vectrex at DI for $15. I knew right away what a steal we were getting. Unfortunately, there were no games included with the system (save of course the amazing Asteroids clone that comes built into the system). Anyway, long story short, we now own yet another gaming system. I can't tell you how smart I feel to have picked it up. Now all I need is to invest in a multicart (a specially made cartridge where some programmer throws all the games ever made for the Vectrex on one handy cartridge) and I'll be iron like a lion in Zion as far as the Vectrex is concerned. If you haven't googled it yet, here's what a Vectrex looks like:

It really is one of the more unique and rare gaming systems in the universe.

Aside from my video gaming high, Megan's keen eye spotted something as we were going to find the guy who was selling the fire pit. We were just driving and she said, "Oh man! Oh man!" Then she turned the car around. I didn't know what to think and I couldn't tell what she was even talking about until we turned around and saw one the most amazing things I've ever seen in my entire life: an all-original 1968 Pontiac Bonneville Ambulance. Back after the truck died, I was looking at a lot of hearses and ambulances. I wanted something awesome and unique, and especially if it had suicide doors. Anyway, I had seen pictures of cars like this online, but I had never seen it in real life. Seriously, you really have to see this beast to fully appreciate it. It had all the original paint and chrome. It had been actually used as an ambulance right up until the guy was selling it. It was in service as an ambulance at one of the local racetracks. So all the lights and the siren worked, and it had stretchers and all the other ambulance accoutraments you could hope for. There were only 50 of these cars ever made, only 8 of which are still around. So this was a rare and awesome beast. The price tag? $4,500. Megan and I both really wanted to buy it. Because it was an ambulance, it only has 28,000 original miles on its 400 big block engine. It truly was a thing of beauty. Megan and I took some pictures, but they didn't survive somehow. I found a picture of the car at the race track which made me love it all the more. Check it out:

Unfortunately the picture is black and white, but you can really get a sense of what an awesome machine it is. Too bad I didn't have $4,500 burning a hole in my pocket.

Anyway, this is the umpteenth straight day that I have added to this entry and it's officially time for me to stop messing with it and just post it. So there ya go.

These Are Words

Hey everybody. I was going to give you an update of some sort, but I don't have time. I actually have a little work to get done around here.

Totally Radical Survey

Your name:
James H. Badger

You have been making the world more amazing since:
That time I did the robot to "Rockit" by Herbie Hancock. I believe that was yesterday.

Oldest/youngest/or middle sibling:
I am the middle kid, which should explain why I'm so weird. Or something. It should tell you something, but it's entirely up to you what it actually tells you.

Your dad's name:
Robert. Do you now have enough of my personal info to sign me up for a credit card in Nigeria and run up a mad bill in my name.

What kind of phone do you have?
I believe it's red. I could probably pick it out of a police lineup if I had to. It would be the one that wasn't an inmate.

Who is your favorite celebrity ever?
Mats Sundin. It's killing me that he might not be with the Leafs next season. I hop ehe chooses to retire if the Leafs don't take him back.br>
Favorite type of music:
I really like power pop. Go check out Teenage Fanclub, Big Star, Jellyfish, and The Rubinoos if you don't know what it is. There are several other bands I can recommend if you're interested.

How many pillows do you sleep with?
I sleep with one. All I need is one cool pillow with a decent amount of fluff and I can sleep for a month.

Ever prank called the pizza place and ordered a pizza for somebody totally random?
No, but you're giving me ideas. If you get a pizza you didn't order sometime soon, it might've been me.

What do you find most of in your room?
There are lots of clothes in our bedroom. Crazy, I know.

How many piercings do you have?
None. I fear having things poked into my flesh.

How about tattoos?
I don't have tattoos either. I fear needles.

Describe your house:
It's awesome. We have a room in the house dedicated entirely to awesome things (video games, records, guitars, movies, and other assorted awesomeness). We have the most awesome pet in the universe. We have a gigantic cactus in the front yard. I could go on and on. We have a great little house.br>
Who is your neighbor across the street?
Our neighbors are nice folks. They're in our ward. I won't release their names for a couple reasons 1) I don't want Nigerian credit cards in their names, and 2) I don't really remember their names, and it's too late to ask now.

Your favorite facial feature:
On myself? On others? I dunno. It's a weird question and I really don't know what to do with it. It's under the legal limit and I'm throwing it back.

Name the band you are listening to now:
I've been listening to the Jellyfish box set. It's amazing.

Who do you know that throws the best parties?
I used to throw some pretty good parties back in the day, as did Megan. These days we don't even get invited to parties most of the time. I guess we're not as fun as we used to be.

Name an item you've kept with yourself since you were young:
I still have the quilt that was made in commemoration of my birth. I think I've had that longer than just about anything in my life.

Possible children's names?
Jimmy jr. But that's not a possible name. Chalk it up as something that will definitely happen. But seriously, I don't think I'd call him Jimmy because he'd probably eventually resent it. But I would like my name to carry on.

What is your favorite method of exercise?
I like to do an hour of this every morning.

What do you do to get money?
I'm the head crap-taker at the crap-taking factory. I take way more crap than anyone else in the factory. Apparantly I'm really good at it.

Do you dye your hair?
The last time I dyed my hair I was going to crazy raves in run-down warehouses in the middle of nowhere. It was long ago and far away, but I have dyed my hair several times in my life.

Own a pair of skinny jeans?
No. They look super uncomfortable. I remember pegging my pants in the late 80s and early 90s and it was super uncomfortable. Those crazy tight jeans the kids are wearing these days look super uncomfy.

What is the longest you have been in the car for a roadtrip?
I dunno. We had some pretty long Utah road trips. Of course the fact that Denver is the farthest East I've been might tell you that I'm not taking any super long road trips. I hope to take a cross-country trip someday.

Been to Six Flags?
I was at Six Flags last week in Denver. But you knew that, right?

What about Disneyland?
Todd, Ryan, Nathan, and I were on a road trip and our car died in front of the gates of Dinsyeland at 3:00 in the morning. I've never actually been inside Disneyland and I'm reasonably sure that I don't want to.

Name the bands you have band tees for:
I have t-shirts for Weezer (I own at least 6 Weezer shirts), Ash, The Black Keys, Iron Maiden, Dio, Metallica, Jimi Hendrix, Bouncing Souls, Rancid, and possibly others.

Favorite local band?
That would have to be Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. Roger Clyne is basically Arizona set to music. Seriously, it's awesome.

How many cell phones have you owned?
I am on my second. I got my first phone, which was prepaid, and they gave me a second phone for free when Megan and I got a fmily plan.

Your nails are painted:
Don't tell me my nails are painted. I'm looking at them right now and they're not.

How many pairs of sweatpants do you own?
None. If I wore sweats, I'd look more like a guy who has nothing to live for than a guy that can pull off that whole "I'm cool because I don't care how I look" look. Seriously, sweats make me look like a guy who lives in a van down by the river.

When was the last time you shaved your legs?
I have never shaved my legs in my entire life. I don't know if you know this, but I'm a guy. I'm not a professional cyclist or swimmer, and I don't ever get my ankles taped, so there's no reason for me to ever let a razor touch my legs

What were you doing this morning at 8am?
I was drogging my sorry carcass into this library for another workday.

What were you doing 15 minutes ago?
Answering some rediculous question or another.

What are you wearing?
I decided to not look down while I'm answering this. These are the things I know for sure: I'm wearing a shirt of some sort and jeans. So I'm reasonably certain that I'm not naked. I'm also wearing my wedding ring and a watch. That's the truth, I can't tell you what I'm wearing on any given day unless I look down and get a peek of it myself.

Are you mad at anyone right now?
Not really. It's Friday, so all my madness melts away. Especially as the clock gets closer to 5:00.

Last person to say they loved you?
Megan. But you knew that, right?

Last person to send you a text?
Nobody. I don't send text messages and I don't really want to receive them. I'll take actual phone calls, though.

What is your middle name?
Hyrum. Now you can definitely run some Nigerian scam on me.

Do you have a crush on anyone?
Yeah. I've totally been crushing on that Megan girl. It's a good thing I married her.

Have you been naked today?
Yeah. I took a shower, and I'm usually nude in the shower. I find it's easier to get a good shower when I'm nude.

How many different drinks have you had today?
I've only had water today.

What have you eaten today?
I had some granola bars and some cheetos. They were delicious.

Are you good at math?
I honeslty have no idea. I was good at math at one point in my life, but it's been years since I've taken any math classes. So I have no idea if any of my math skills are still around. I don't think it's like riding a bike. I'm pretty sure I can't just pick it up again.

Do you have plans on Saturday night?
Maybe. I dunno. Megan will tell me if I do.

Do you draw your name in the sand while your at the beach?
My at the beach? Do I now own at the beach? When someone else is at the beach do I get royalties? Seriously, the "your" and "you're" mix-up drives me crazy.

Have you ever been awake for 48 hours straight?
Yes. I hope I never have to do that again. I'm too old. I need my sleep now.

Do you like the ocean?
I enjoy the ocean, but there's not a whole lot I can do with it. My ears can't stand more than 6 feet of water, so that severely limits what I can do in the ocean. Of course it make me less likely to be eaten by a shark, so at least I've got that going for me.

Would you stay friends with your ex's?
I've lost contact with both of them, but we generally parted ways on good terms.

What are you excited about?
I'm excited that it'll be the weekend and I'll actually be home to enjoy it. Of course I'll probably be doing things around the house and whatnot, but at least I'll be home.

What did you do yesterday?
I went to work. It was a fairly boring day.

Are any of your great-grandparents still alive?
Not only are all my great grandparents no longer with us, my grandparents have all passed on as well.

Where do you keep your change?
I keep it in a record bowl that Amber made me from a copy of David Bowie's "Hunky Dory".

Who is the best person in your life?
Megan.

Would you rather sleep with someone else or alone?
I'm getting used to sharing a bed with Megan. Sometimes she'll get up before I do, and when I wake up in the bed all alone it feels a little weird. I think I'm getting used to being married.

What was the weather like on your birthday?
I dunno, but it was an awesome birthday regardless of the weather.

Called to Repentance

Well, after asking James if we could start a new blog geared toward the both of us, I guess I better add to the blog as well. I've been accused a couple of times this week of never writing in the blog, and I'm kinda sad to say that it's true. The blog has been a little weighted on the James side, but I'll try to be more faithful in writing.

We're both updating the blog at the same time this week, so there will probably be a little overlap. So, if you want the less exciting but shortish summary of the weekend, you can read my version, and if you want the more hilarious and and in depth version of the weekend, James is your man.

Notes on James B-day:

So the B-day was pretty fun. I got James a Gamecube for his B-day which turned out to be a little more difficult than I had expected. Bookmans has had about five gamecubes on hand for the past four months or so at any given time. Well, we had finally racked up enough bookmans trade credits to get the system, some games, and maybe even an extra controller. When I went to pick up a system on the Saturday before his B-day they were completely out. I was bummed that we wouldn't be about to use our store credits, but I wasn't too scared because I knew I could find a gamecube on trusted ol' Creg's List. I found one for an even better deal that the one at Bookmans with two wireless controllers and about six games for about the same price as just the system at Bookmans. I was going to pick the system up after work on Tuesday, but when I contacted the seller for final directions, they informed me that they had decited to keep the system.
So, there it was the day before James's Birthday and I was gamecube less. By a miracle I found another system I could buy at about 7:30 and I snuck out of the house before James got home so I could buy it. I then got up at about 3:00 so I could wrap the presents and go back to bed.

It was pretty fun being in charge of a birthday. I got to buy some presents and take my man for a night out on the town. I was pretty excited about the concept of finding all the free stuff in the valley you can get on your B-day. One because we're not made of money and two because free stuff is awesome. I found this website that lists a bunch of places that give our free stuff on your B-Day. On the the top of the list was Joe's BBQ which gives you a free meal on your B-day and Krispy Kremes who gives you a free dozen glazed doughnuts. We also took advantage of a free movie rental at Hollywood video.

Weekend Update:
So James and I had another weekend of firsts. We flew on a plane for the first time as a couple and James had his first domestic flight ever. I also missed a plane for the first time in my life. I've had a couple of close calls in the past, but this time we actually missed it. It wouldn't be so sad if missing the plane didn't mean we missed Jen's wedding too. Our plane landed at the same time that the sealing started. I was really disappointed because it would be the first temple marriage I had been to besides my own. But we still made it to the luncheon, the ring ceremony and the reception, so I guess that's pretty good.

It was really great to see Jen. She looked so great and her and Justin are so cute. Their relationship seams to be pretty similar to James and I except they wrestle more. Which makes since since they are both the same size and pretty evenly matched. James would kill me every time.

On Saturday, we went to six flags. Partially because it was the fist thing we found when driving into downtown Denver, and after getting turned around in the city and not being able to find a place to park for relatively cheap, Six Flags seamed like the best option. I was a little worried because we didn't have any sun block and I could justify paying $10 for it in the gift shop.
We had a great time and it was fantastic to have my very own ride buddy the whole time. The only downer to our visit was my attempt to get some Nachos. I chose Nachos because it was the only thing that I could justify for the price. The line was about 15 people long and took me 45 minutes to get through. Buy the end of the line, I was tired, frustrated and ridiculously hungry. I was getting pretty close to yelling at the poor kid at the counter, but I could tell he hated his job and he was feeling super stressed, so I let him go. By the time I got through the line, James was hungry again after eating his corn dog 45 minutes earlier and went to get another one.

We were able stay at Jen's house since they were on their Honeymoon which was great. The only complaint I had was that in places where it's cooler like Colorado and Utah, they don't seam to have a firm grasp on the blessings of AC. It was 81 degrees in the bedroom we were in and we didn't have a fan. I got up and moved to the living room in the middle of the night because I couldn't stand the heat. I just think its funny that Colorado is too hot for me when Phoenix is just fine.

Here are some pictures of the weekend:

Here is James showing off his new Nuggets hat in down town Longmont. Man did we ever have a killer time or what!

James and the Nuggets hat at King Sooper - Denver's most popular grocery store and the name of an imaginary snake you can ask James about later.

Here is the Cathedral we stopped to see. I have to include this image because it's my only solo shot. Apparently I was the one taking the pictures, so there are more pics of just James than me.

Isn't it lovely

Here's James at the Waffle House. I love this picture. James looks so chill.

Here's a not super great one of us at Jen's wedding.

Here's a fuzzy one of Jen and Justin. Sorry, the light was bad.

And for sweet momories, here's a picture of James and I before we were dating but after we knew we would probably get married.

Oh, and for all of you who would like to know (which I'm sure is all of you), I just got called to be a young womens advisor. I'm super excited. They aren't quite sure where they are going to put me yet, but I think it's going to be a blast.
James was right on the money when he guessed the calling. Before we went in to get him set apart, he leaned over and whispered in my ear: "I hope they give you a calling too, and I hope it's in Young Women's." What a smart guy.

Well, that's all I've got for now, but I think this weekend has been very well covered.

Travels in the Mysterious East or: That John Denver is Full of Crap

So there are a couple things I need to write about that I haven't written about yet due to some information that I don't want to have snapped up by big brother at work. Mainly I don't want them to know I call in sick instead of requesting time off. I can use my vacation time as sick time if I so desire, and it saves me the hassle of listening to my boss whine and complain about what a huge inconvenience my absence is for him. So I don't want that to get sent in to the mucky mucks and have them come down on me for doing what I have to do to keep my sanity. So there you have it.

First of all, I need to tell you all about my birthday and the amazing awesomeness that it was. I took the day off work because I just wasn't going to go to to work on my birthday. That's just not the way it's done. So early that morning, Megan woke me up and asked me if I wanted to open my presents before she left for work. I told her that my family usually does the whole wake you up and sing happy birthday to you thing. So I told her I'd open them right then. So I pretended to fall back asleep and she brought in some presents. I got some books, two of which I was able to guess (once again, it's hard to surprise your spouse. I wasn't there when she bought the books, but I was able to figure out what they were before opening them. I guess I just know her and she knows me. It takes a little of the surprise out of things like that, but in the long run its more satisfying than the alternative). The big present of the day was a Gamecube (That's how Nintendo spells it. Just one word: gamecube) and a couple games for it. In addition to the gifts, my amazing wife also cooked me a special birthday breakfast. So I got the full treatment.

I sent Megan off to work and I sat down to play on my new gaming system (current gaming system roll call: Atari 2600, Atari 800XL, NES, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo clone, Playstation, Xbox, Gamecube, and if you want to count the handhelds I also have an original Game Boy, a Game Boy Color, and a Game Boy Advance SP. I guess I'm some sort of collector). I plopped in Super Mario Sunshine, which is an interesting and strange Mario game. Then I plopped in Super Smash Bros., and it didn't work. I was pretty bummed about that, but I got excited at the prospect of taking the game back to Bookman's because Bookman's is a wondrous place. So I grabbed the receipt and the game and headed on over.

At Bookman's they didn't have any more Super Smash Bros. They didn't really have much for the Gamecube at all. It's kind of a sadly underrated system. So I ended up buying a memory card for the Gamecube and a few Atari 2600 games. They have a massive bin of Atari 2600 games that they sell for $1 or less, which is nice. So I've been stocking up on Atari games every time I go in there. So I picked up my wares and left the store. I still really wanted Super Smash Bros., so I took a trip over to the dungeon of dorks video game store.

I call it the dungeon of dorks because these guys have approximately 0 social skills and all they know are video games and other nerdly/dorkly things. Their prices are steep because they probably base things on what they would be willing to pay for a game rather than what an average citizen would be willing to pay. I both love and hate going into that store. I love it because they have tons of stuff. They have everything from Vectrex games to used PC games. I hate it because those guys are constantly one-upping each other with video game/nerd knowledge. So if you waltz in there, you will be bombarded with one-ups and corrections to everything you say. I remember one of them going crazy on me telling me that the Game Boy Advance version of Gunstar Heroes is technically an adaptation, not a port. So yeah, it's a crazy place. Now I don't know why I went into all this explanation of this place because it was actually closed when I rolled by. So I went to the next best place: Game Crazy.

I dropped by the Game Crazy on Alma School and Main, where the friendly Indian fellow works. The friendly Indian fellow is a funny guy. He knows tons about video games and genuinely enjoys telling people about awesome games. He's always super chipper and he calls everyone, "boss" or "chief." The fun part about it is that he does it all in a thick Indian accent. I get a kick out of it. So he guides me to some awesome Gamecube games, none of which were Super Smash Bros. So I still don't have that game, but I picked up a couple other choice titles. I got Paper Mario, which is a game I think Megan could pick up and enjoy. I also got a Tony Hawk game and a James Bond game. So it wasn't all bad. I just realized I sound like a little kid being so excited about new video games on my birthday.

I went back home and played the new games, which was fun. When Megan got home from work, it was time to kick the birthday plans into full effect. She had planned on taking the day off with me so we could both go around and collect on the free stuff people give you on your birthday. If we had both taken the day, we could have both gone on free birthday rampage and been elbow deep in frosting and ice cream by the end of the night. As it was, we tried to fit as much in the remainder of the day as possible.

We headed over to Joe's Barbecue in Gilbert for a free birthday meal. They do it up right at Joe's. I got a full free meal with a free pulled pork sammich, a drink, a side of some sort, and a slice of lemon cake. It was really good food. Halfway through the meal I got a call from the padres who had called to sing happy birthday. There were only three of them (Mom, Dad, and Lynnette) but they made quite a racket and it sounded like there were more of them. So I got my official birthday song as I was enjoying the only cake I'd eat the whole day. I'm glad I didn't have an actual birthday cake this year because, if'n you didn't know, I had way too many cakes last year. It was out of control. Anyway, I'd like to give a big endorsement to Joe's as a birthday destination. It's delicious and free, which are the only two things you need to know about it.

After Joe's we headed on over to the Krispy Kreme to collect on my free dozen doughnuts. Krispy Kreme also does it up right. A dozen is a lot of free doughnuts to just give away, but with how addictive they are, they know people will be back. So we picked up the free doughnuts and headed over to Hollywood Video to pick up a free video rental. We got "Be Kind Rewind" which is a movie I've wanted to see for a while. It was directed by Michel Gondry, who can be a little weird and artsy at times, but it starred Jack Black and Mos Def, not to mention a super awesome job by Danny Glover. So there you go. The movie was not laugh out loud funny, but it was a lot more touching than you'd expect. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from seeing it. Megan and I both enjoyed it.

On Thursday I actually went back into work, which I thought was funny because I was just going to be gone again on Friday. But there was no sense in burning through all my time off, so I showed up. It was a pretty standard day: do everything I can to avoid the boss, and wait until the last minute to get all my work done. I think I've developed some bad work habits at this job that I hope I can ditch when I'm working somewhere else someday.

After work on Thursday we made arrangements to go over to Mary and Konden's to drop Turbo off. They had the great pleasure of being the tortoise sitters while we were away. We ended up staying fairly late. We played a couple games of Mag-Blast, which Mary and Konden swear is one of the best games ever made. They beat us pretty bad the first time around, so we weren't to keen on the game at first, but Megan battled Mary to a draw in the second game, so I guess it's a fun game after all. It's funny because I really didn't understand all the rules until I was dead. Now that I get it I might enjoy it a lot more the next time out.

I also took some time to throw a new Nintendo emulator on the computer for Konden to play with. He also showed me a crazy game that I had apparently downloaded but never played. It's called "Spiritual Warfare" and I believe it's brought to you by the same people who brought you "Billy Graham's Bible Adventures." The game is a little like Zelda, but instead of killing monsters and collecting weapons you're converting people and casting out demons with fruits of the spirit. You collect pieces of the armor of God as you go around, which help you on your way. It's actually a pretty fun little game, and seeing the animation of the unbelievers becoming converted is pretty hilarious. So for those of you with Nintendo emulators, there's a game for you to try.

So we got out of Mary and Konden's fairly late, and then when we got back we realized we still had laundry to do before we could go to bed. We didn't end up going to be until 1:30 or so, which was horrible because we had to be up at 4:00 to get ready for our flight. Needless to say, we didn't get much sleep that night.

We woke up after only a few hours of sleep and started throwing things together. Neither of us had packed, and we had other things to take care of before we left. So basically we were stumbling around the house in a no-sleep stupor. We got out the door later than we wanted and headed over to airport.

Due to the fact that we were going to be leaving and returning on super early flights, we opted to leave Megan's car in the parking lot. We ended up parking in the economy lot, which meant we had to catch a shuttle to the airport. We were already running a little late when we pulled into the economy lot, so waiting for a slow shuttle didn't help much. When we finally dragged our sorry carcasses to the Frontier Airlines ticket counter, the lady told us we were too late to check into our flight. Not only that, but she didn't have a record of Megan having a ticket (though she had mine, which was odd because it was Megan who made the reservations). So we took a few extra minutes at the ticket counter proving that Megan did indeed have a reservation, and then we both got standby tickets for the next flight. The beauty of the next flight was that it didn't leave for an extra two hours. So that basically sealed the deal that we would miss the actual wedding, which is something I bet Megan on. I told her that some unforeseen circumstance would bar us from getting to the wedding in time. It would have been a tight squeeze even if everything went according to plan.

So we took our time getting to the gate and getting through security, but we did get through everything in time call Jen and tell her we wouldn't make the wedding as we sat there and watched our plane, which was just sitting there for a few minutes before taking off. So yeah, we could have easily made that flight, but restrictions being what they are we sat around the airport for a little longer.

At one point Megan went up to the lady at the counter for our gate and asked her what the chances of us getting through on standby were. She told us it didn't look good because the flight only had three open seats with about an hour left before it closed and they started giving seats to standby passengers. So we were worried that we might be spending a good chunk of our day just sitting in an airport, but thankfully this was not the case. We somehow managed to sneak onto our standby flight.

The flight to Denver was just long enough that I couldn't get tired to enough to actually sleep on the plane (I actually have a big problem with that. I have to be super tired to sleep in a moving car, bus, or plane). As we were touching down in Denver I made a few observations: 1) the area immediately surrounding Denver International Airport is the ugliest part of the whole state. It looks like the less interesting parts of Arizona (i.e. the part between Kingman and Bullhead City), which is not the sort of thing you expect from Colorado. 2) The farmers in Colorado would make a lot more money with their crops if they would use the whole field. Seriously, most of the fields I saw were growing crops in circular patterns. This is because they use those motorized sprinkler things, but instead of using the ones that cover the length of the whole field, they use ones that only cover the radius of the circle they plant their crops in. Call me crazy but I think the extra crops you would get from the corners would help defray the cost of the extra pipe, wheels, and sprinkler heads. 3) When we touched down in Denver, it became the farthest East I have ever travelled in my life. This means I really need to travel more. I'm 29 and I've never been East of Denver. That just sounds kinda sad. But we did get to make lots of jokes over the weekend that Denver was part of the Mysterious East, so taking comedy into account it all probably evens out. 4) The Denver airport looks like a giant overturned caterpillar. it just does.

So Megan and I got off the plane and took another shuttle over to the overpriced car rental company we were using. Lucky for us it was customer appreciation day so we got free hot dogs and water. That helped us feel like we weren't being totally gypped on our car rental. When we finally got up to the counter to rent a car, we were surprised to find that it was going to cost even more than we had planned on. And of course they tried to throw in extra costs and talk us into paying them for super deluxe insurance and a tank of gas in advance. We barely escaped with the shirts on our backs

We hopped into our rental car and were ready to hit the road when we realized that we had no idea where we were going, which roads went where, and where we were even supposed to meet everyone. We called up Jen, who should've been and probably was busy with bridely duties, but hers was the only number we had that we could call. She got us pointed in the right direction to meet everyone at the post-wedding luncheon. We ended up getting to the luncheon well before everyone else, so we took a minute to try and catch a nap in the car.

Once everyone showed up, we made our way into the church building and sat down for one of the more delicious wedding luncheons I've ever seen. The main course was a choice between barbecued ribs, bratwursts, or chicken. So you know it was good. We got to sit right across from the bride and groom and offer up our apologies for not getting even less sleep so we could've made our flight on time. We had Jen draw us a crude map to her house with directions on how to get back to Denver proper (the luncheon was in Longmont and Jen's place that we actually stayed in was in Loveland). We ended up using that napkin map to navigate our entire weekend.

After the luncheon, Megan and I opted to go see the sights of downtown Longmont. Jen's sisters told us there was nothing to see, but we saw all the sights and had us a grand old time. We found the main street downtown area of Longmont, parked the car, and hot footed around. We went into every pawn shop, thrift store, guitar store, and art gallery we could find. We only ended up covering one side of the street but we had a bona fide killer time and I even picked up a souvenir: a hat featuring the old Denver Nuggets logo. If you don't remember it, it looks a little something like this:

In case you were wondering what the Nuggets uniforms looked like back in those days, check our how wicked awesome hall-of-famer Alex English looks in the old Nuggets uniform:

I think they should definitely bring this look back. We really need to see Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson sporting the rainbow. But back to the original point: I picked up an old Nuggets hat for two bucks and it was awesome.

After thrifting, pawning, and generally enjoying the thrills of downtown Longmont, Megan and I headed over to the reception. It was kind of funny seeing Jen in a wedding dress. She's a lot more girly than she was when she was Megan's roommate, and I mean that in a good way. We had a good time at the reception, but I was unbelievably tired. Remember we had only gotten about 3 1/2 hours of sleep before all this went down. Jen and Justin graciously offered to let us sleep in their house while they went on their honeymoon. Their house was another buncha miles North of Denver in Loveland, and I ended up falling asleep on the way over. It was funny because the sun hadn't really even gone down when we left the reception, but I was as tired as I have ever been in my entire life.

Megan and I ended up getting to bed that night at some ridiculously early hour like 8:00 or so. I slept like a log. I honestly can't remember being as tired as I was that night or sleeping as soundly. Megan got up a couple times halfway through the night because she couldn't sleep and I didn't notice at all.

The next morning our only plan was to see all the sights of Denver, but we really only had the napkin map so we just headed in the direction of the Denver skyline and hoped that fun times would find us. Before we got too far, we stopped off at a Waffle House for breakfast. I thought it was funny because the people in the Waffle House were exactly the kind of people you'd expect to see in a movie where people stop off at a Waffle House somewhere. I saw guys who may have well just been Sea Bass from Dumb and Dumber. So it was a good breakfast and a good opportunity for people-watching.

When we reached Denver, the first thing we saw was Elitch Gardens, which is a Six Flags theme park. We were debating whether or not we should just opt for the easy fun time of a theme park or go find some fun of our own. As we were driving around, I saw the steeple of what I thought could've been the cathedral Kimberly told me to go see while I was there. We set out on a quest to find the cathedral, and soon found that what I thought was the cathedral was actually a big state building or something. Oddly enough, the cathedral we were looking for was directly in our field of view as we realized we were looking at the wrong building. So we went and took a gander and some pictures at St. Francis, which was built in the late 1800s. Unfortunately, it wasn't open for visitors so we didn't get to go inside.

After the cathedral, Megan and I decided to go back to the one place we knew we could find and where we knew we could have fun: Elitch Gardens. It turned out to be a good choice. We hit all of the major roller coasters and other rides, I paid way too much for a corn dog and Megan stood in a line that didn't move for 45 minutes to get some nachos. Things like that were a little ridiculous, but the rides were fun. The sign at the entrance said, "If you haven't seen Elitch Gardens, you haven't seen Denver." so I guess we fulfilled our mission to see Denver.

We left the park well before it closed, but I was nursing a headache and we were both still fairly tired. We decided that the proper time to get up to catch a 6:45 flight is 3:00 in the morning, so we made an early exit so we could get to bed on time and not be dead tired for church. We picked up a pizza on our wy back to Jen's house and had pizza and watched the new Willy Wonka (I guess it's not all that new anymore) for dinner. I had never seen that version of Willy Wonka. It wasn't bad, but I prefer Gene Wilder. It just really made me want to read the books so I can see what the movies really should've been.

We went to bed right after dinner and woke up at 3:00 in the am. We immediately got our stuff together, ate the rest of the pizza for breakfast (yes, we forgot it was fast Sunday, but by this point we were lucky we knew what day it was at all. We threw our things into the car and headed back toward the airport. We knew we needed to get gas for the car somewhere before hitting the car rental return, but we couldn't find a single gas station along the way. It was driving us nuts as we were driving toward any signs of civilization that looked like they might sell gas. Let me just say that if you're looking for gas near the airport in Denver you have two options 1) Drive a long way back into Denver and hopefully find a place there or 2) Go to the Circle K near the rental car return which charges a full 50 cents more than the places in town because they're the only gas station within 20 miles of the airport. It rediculous, but we bit the bullet and filled our tank with what we could only hope was the best dang gas ever extracted from the entire Earth.

We dropped the rental car off, caught the shuttle back to the airport, and showed up in plenty of time to catch our flight. So at least that went well. Megan slept or made attempts to sleep the entire way home. I knew I just couldn't make it happen so I stayed awake and listened to my ipod for a couple hours. Before we knew it, we were back in Phoenix.

Megan and I took advantage of the fact that we arrived back in Phoenix somewhere in the 7:00 in the am hour and we hit the hay for a couple hours before getting ready to go to church. In doing this, it made all the events of the morning seem like they were a completely seperate and distinct day.

Lucky for us, we're in the ward that meets at 1:00, so we had plenty of time to catch some Z's and be rested enough for church. I got sustained and set apart in my new calling, and I'm excited for all that bidness to start. Megan also got a calling, but I'll leave it to her to tell you what it is. I'll just say that I predicted her calling with 100% accuracy. I also predicted that something would happen and we wouldn't make it to the wedding on time. So don't ask me to predict anything about your life. I'm on a scary hot streak right now.

Well, I'm starting to lose track of where I wanted any of this to go so I think I'll shut it down. I had a great birthday and Megan and I had a killer time in Denver. More than anything we're both really happy to be home in our own house. Barring any more house-sitting, we should be home until Thanksgiving, which sounds perfectly fine to me. So I'll let that be that. If you made it all the way to the end of this entry, give yourself a gold star.
